The first democratic republic of the Muslim world

Azerbaijan is located on South Caucasus bordered by Russia to the north, Caspian Sea to the east, Iran in the south and Armenia and Georgia to the west.

The country occupies the area of about 33,774 sq. miles; the total area is divided as Caucasus Mountains in the north and lowland in the central area that includes the famous Kura River, which flows through the central area. The climate is dry, subtropical with hot in summer and mild in winter.

Azerbaijan coalesce the legacy of two august civilizations–the olden Persian phrase and Seljuk Turks of the 11th century. The name Azerbaijan is believed to be   derived from the Persian phrase “Land of Fire,” referring together to its petroleum deposits, identified since earliest times, and to its position being an earlier center of the Zoroastrian faith.
Since the country is situated on the coast of the Caspian Sea and with a leg on each side of the trade routes connecting Europe to Central Asia and the Near East, Azerbaijan was fought over by Russia, Ottomans and the Persia. Lastly, the Russians break up Azerbaijan’s territory with Persia in 1828 by the Treaty of Turkmenchay, setting up the present frontiers and quenching the last inhabitant dynasty of local Azerbaijani khans. Following the fall down of the Russian realm in 1917, a sovereign state was declared in 1918 after an unsuccessful effort to set up a Transcaucasian Republic with Armenia and Georgia.

The country became the first democratic republic of Muslim world that gave women the right to vote in 1919. By the arrival of Red Army the country incorporated into the amalgamate Soviet Socialist Republic in 1922; Azerbaijan became a union republic of the U.S.S.R. in 1936. The unrest of late 1980s eventually leads to a violent confrontation when Soviet troops murdered 190 nationalist protesters in Baku in January 1990, Azerbaijan affirmed its independence from the U.S.S.R. on August 30, 1991.
Azerbaijan’s economy is in progress in which the state persists to have been playing a prevailing position. The country has significant oil treasury and a noteworthy agricultural prospective based on a broad diversity of climatic precincts.

The historical center of Baku divulges its turbulent times of yore, from its origin as a Persian capital, through its oil boom to its Soviet occupation. The old city is a warren of passage, historical buildings, mosques and leftovers of fortification, including the Palace of the Shirvan Shahs and the Maiden Tower. The city hosts vivacious arts and cultural activities, as well as a active contemporary commerce sector. Baku in fact holds a small area and you can stride anywhere. But if you need to take a taxi, you need to bargain well

as there is no taximeter. Some of the world’s most famous carpets are made in the area of the greater Azerbaijan and Baku now has at least one excellent carpet factory in private sector. The old carpets considered antique (over 30 years) can not legally be exported.

Flights from all major UK airports are available for Azerbaijan and you can always get the cheap flights to Baku from any major international airline.  One of the things that the inhabitants do enjoy is a pleasure boat trip. In fact there is nothing more energizing than the power of the sea breeze in the midst of the day heat.
